The condition of “dry eyes” can cause significant distress to those that suffer from it. But it isn’t always correctly diagnosed. In fact, the latest figures from the TFOS (Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society) indicate that a diagnosis of “dry eye” is not often made.

However, the diagnostic and treatment options for dry eyes are comprehensive. And the focus is shifting: dry eyes are becoming an increasingly important part of ophthalmic practice worldwide.

More attention to this condition, both in outpatients and in pre- and post-operative patients, will reduce the number of visits to an ophthalmologist and improve patient satisfaction.

Prof. Dr. Carina Koppen is head of the Ophthalmology Division at University Hospital Antwerp (UZA). Holding a position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Antwerp, Prof. Dr. Carina Koppen leads the research groups ARGOS (Visual Optics Lab Antwerp) and VOLANTIS (Visual Optics Lab Antwerp). She is also board member of EuCornea – European Society of Cornea & Ocular Surface Disease Specialists – and contributes to the IT-DED project as member of the External Advisory Board.
